QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

QUESTION:  I am planning to construct a 10' x 10' storage building.
Do I need a permit?

ANSWER:  No.  The Building Code does not require a permit for   accessory structures less than 120 square feet in area.  However, you will need Zoning Department approval and must file the building permit application and site plan.

QUESTION:  I am planning on building a fence.  Do I need a permit?

ANSWER:  No.  The Building Code does not require a permit for fences less than 6' in height and in residential districts, and fences are not allowed over 6' in height.  However, you will need Zoning Department approval and must file the building permit application and site plan.

QUESTION:  I am planning on replacing my storm door.  Do I need a permit?

ANSWER:  No.  The Building Code does not require a permit for minor repair project where the total valuation of the work, including labor, is less than $500.00.

QUESTION:  I am planning on remodeling my basement into a family room and will not be making any structural changes.  Do I need a permit?

ANSWER:  Yes.  Several items will need to be discussed with the Building Department.  Such as proper headroom, lighting and ventilation, etc.  It is advised to bring your plans into the Building Department well in advance of your start date to discuss your project with the Inspector.

In all cases, the permitee is required to call for all necessary inspections.  Advance notice is required to allow our staff ample time to schedule inspections.  In some cases, 24-hour notification may be required.
